Historic school finds a home

ALTONA - When the village of Altbergthal established their school in 1904, they had no idea how much travelling that little schoolhouse would eventually do.

After the school divisions amalgamated in 1965, it was moved to New Hope. When the school became vacant in 1982, the Altbergthal School preservation committee moved it to a spot behind the Rhineland Pioneer Centre in Altona.

Everything is finally falling into place for the Altbergthal School.

After standing unused on its current location behind the MEC in Altona since 1982, the Altbergthal Historical Committee has made a deal with the Neubergthal Heritage Foundation to move the 108 year old building to the Eddie Schmidt site in Neubergthal.

Himmelbleiw offers a glimpse into the past

Himmelbleiw (heavenly blue) begins June 27 and showcases the early, colourful home furnishings and decorative arts of Manitoba Mennonites.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Neubergthal Heritage Foundation (NHF) and can be seen at the Friesen Housebarn Interpretive Centre.

Feds give grant to Eddie Schmidt Housebarn

The conservation plan for the Eddie Schmidt Housebarn in Neubergthal is another step closer to reality after a grant that could total $20,895 was given from Parks Canada's Historic Sites Cost Sharing program. Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Hoeppner was in Neubergthal on May 26 to present the grant and tour parts of the street village, a national historic site.
